Nowadays women’s active involvement in sport is seen declining. Among others, (one of the
reasons for this is that it has been considered only men’s activity) It is in light of this fact that
the study was carried out to examine socio-cultural factors affecting women’s active
involvement in sports activities in Amir-nur woreda, Harari Regional state. The populations
of the study were all parents who have daughter/s aged above 15 years old in the study area.
The study utilized both qualitative and quantitative research approach and cross sectional
research design. The study employed purposive sampling techniques to select the FGD
participants, while random sampling technique was used to select the survey respondents. A
structured and semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 334 parents
among the total sample size of 377 households and FGDs were conducted by using an
unstructured guide. Thus, the findings show that parents’ economic problem, parents’s lack
ofexperience in sport involvements, and inaccessibility of sport field, illiterate parent, and
parentss’ fearof sexual harassment and abuse, parent gender stereotypes and cultural beliefs
are potential factors determining the level and active involvement of women in sports. In view
of this, it was recommended that parents and the larger society should show supportfor
women participation in sport training and tournamentsand positive attitudes towards women
involvement in sports. Also, regional government at all levels should create enabling
environment, and mass media should organize enlightenment programs that will mitigate the
socio-cultural factors hindering women’s involvement in sports.

Abreham Belachew; (Assit. Prof.), Birhanu Midakso
The study investigated the roles of religious institutions and the challenges facing them in
maintaining peace and harmony in three districts of East Hararghe Zone. In doing so, the
study employed a qualitative research approach as the issue deals with people’s
perspectives and lived experiences. Explanatory cross-sectional and case study research
designs were employed to uncover the reasons and go deep into the selected cases,
respectively. The study used primary, i.e. key informant interviewee, in-depth interviewee,
and focus group discussants, and secondary data sources like published and unpublished
documents to gather relevant data. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select
individuals who have sufficient knowledge in the area. The study employed thematic
analysis to sort-out important themes of the data. The finding of the study demonstrated
that religious institutions have preached about peace and harmony, condemned conflicts,
and put religious doctrines into practice. Nonetheless, there were issues unaddressed in
maintaining peace and harmony such as teaching words of God regularly and treating
adherents who have different backgrounds on an equal basis to the level expected. The
study also uncovered lack of entertaining ethnolinguistic differences among followers of
the institutions, divisions of religious fathers based on ethnic group and language
identities, and community categorizations on ethnolinguistic and religious basis as social
challenges hindering the institutions in maintaining peace and harmony. Moreover, the
study revealed government maltreatments, manipulations of religious fathers, and failure
to entertain religious institutions’ cases and biases as political challenges facing the
institutions in maintaining peace and harmony. The study recommends that religious
institutions should entertain ethnolinguistic differences of the followers and cooperate with
the government to the level expected of them. Additionally, the government should treat
religious institutions found in the study equally and entertain religious institutions’ cases
officially to maintain peace and harmony successfully

2022-07-01T00:00:00ZOPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONDOMINIUM NEIGHBORHOOD: THE CASE OF TWO SELECTED CONDOMINIUM SITES IN HARAR CITYHelina Shimeles(Assis Prof) Akalework Mengeshahttp://ir.haramaya.edu.et//hru/handle/123456789/57222023-05-08T07:32:53Z2022-05-01T00:00:00ZOPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONDOMINIUM NEIGHBORHOOD: THE CASE OF TWO SELECTED CONDOMINIUM SITES IN HARAR CITY
Helina Shimeles; (Assis Prof) Akalework Mengesha
Social relationships provide individuals companionship and social support during good and
hard times; specially in neighborhoods social interaction among people living near one another
has significant impact on their social life. Neighbourhoods are a central component of daily life
for human beings. In the past, neighbourhood social interaction may consist of discussing with
neighbours, playing with children, sharing information and resources in the community, or
watching over someone’s house while they are away. However, because of the urbanization
and the change of housing structures to condominiums, people tend to practice fewer social
relationships. This significantly reduced neighbourhood social networks and values, and
deteriorated existing norms. This study explored the opportunities and challenges of
condominium neighbourhood for social relationships in Harar town, Ethiopia. A total of 250
structured enumerator administered questionnaire, 6 interviews with Filla condominium and
Ras Mekonnen condominium residents, two FGD with condominium committees were done to
collect data. While quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, thematic analysis
was employed for qualitative data. The findings of the study indicate that there are poor social
relationships across the two condominium sites. Lack of not knowing each other, isolation,
immediacy, disruptive behaviour and lifestyle are the main challenges to establish social
relationships among the condominium residents. Diversified culture, autonomous use of
facilities and social relations are mentioned as opportunities of living in the condominium
neighbourhood. The study argues that forming social relationships are basic for community
development and to enhance interpersonal relationships in the condominium neighbourhoods.
Thus, the study recommend that the residents need to develop some strategies to establish social
organizations for mutual benefits, and the social affairs office and mass media should give due
consideration in endorsing community awareness on how existing social relationships could be
kept for better relationship among the condominium.
