SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL FACTORS AFFECTING PHYSICIAN-PATIENT INTERACTION: THE CASE OF HARAMAYA GENERAL HOSPITAL, MAYA CITY, OROMIA NATIONAL REGIONAL STATE
Mohammedin Ahmed; Birhanu Midakso (Asst. Prof.)
The purpose of this study was to assess the socioeconomic and cultural factors affecting the
interaction between doctors and patients in Haramaya general hospital, Maya City, Oromia
regional state. In order to achieve the study's goal, a descriptive cross-sectional research design
was used, which combines a quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The quantitative
data was collected from 384 respondents through questionnaires and qualitative data were
collected from medical director and two physicians of the hospitals management team member
through key informant and in-depth interview tools of data collection. The quantitative data was
analyzed through descriptive statistics in the form of tables, frequency distribution and percent.
The qualitative data from respondents through key informants and in-depth interviews was
analyzed through careful interpretation of meaning based on the objectives of the study. Previous
studies have focused largely on waiting time, cost of the treatment, patient satisfaction and not
much has been documented on in-patient outcome of health care seeking in tertiary institution
from the point of view of the patient themselves. This study, investigated the socio-economic and
cultural factors that affect physician-patient interaction focused on in-patient case with care in
Haramaya general hospital, Maya City, Oromia National Regional State. As the study indicated,
as a result of socio-economic and cultural factors, the interaction between patients and physicians
were poor and patients faced the problems of poor communication, they did not have a good
relationship with their physicians in medical care. It is recommended that physicians and hospital management bodies should pay proper attention to how to interact with patients in order to
eliminate the unfavorable conditions affecting the physician-patient interaction and consider the
patients socioeconomic status and cultural issues related to health care during consultation with
their patients.

with their explanation. There are many historical factors that contributed to the emergence and
evolution of night markets in the study area. The first factors were started from when the
authority of Gadasystems loses his power during the 18th century due to two forces, which were

SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DEVELOPMENT- INDUCED DISPLACEMENT: THE CASE OF DISPLACED HOUSEHOLDS OF THE SABIAN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN DIRE DAWA, ETHIOPIA
Tsion Getachew Tenna; (Assis Profe) Belay Wonber; (PhD) Abenezer Wakuma
Displaced people due to development projects face many socio-cultural and economic
challenges. Assessment on displaced persons due to the Dire Dawa City Administration`s Sabian
Redevelopment Project was conducted to assess the socio-cultural effects of DID on the
displaced households, to assess the economic effects of DID on the displaced households and to
assess the coping strategies practiced by displaced households. The study employed a mixed
method approach using census-based survey, key informant interviews, FGDs and desk review of
relevant published documents to collect primary and secondary data. Descriptive analysis was
used to describe the extent of the socio-cultural and economic effects of DID.
The study findings show that the displaced people`s social ties were weakened, their
neighborhood and social networks disrupted due to the displacement and they struggled with
accessing basic social services. The displaced HHs were pushed into economic hardship. Loss of
employments and income greatly affected their ability to meet basic needs and they lacked
assistance to restore their livelihoods and economic wellbeing.
Ther study recommended measures to be undertaken by government and other stakeholders such
as consent and participation of project affected communities in decisions concerning them, raise
awareness on the rights, obligations, opportunities and challenges of DID, encourage displaced
people to get involved in activities that can help them re-establish social networks and continue
practicing their cultural traditions at their new settlement area, working on rebuilding economic
condition and restore the livelihood of displaced persons as well as conducting further studies on
the long-term effects of DID
