<title>SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DEVELOPMENT- INDUCED DISPLACEMENT: THE CASE OF DISPLACED HOUSEHOLDS OF THE SABIAN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN DIRE DAWA, ETHIOPIA</title>

<description>SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DEVELOPMENT- INDUCED DISPLACEMENT: THE CASE OF DISPLACED HOUSEHOLDS OF THE SABIAN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN DIRE DAWA, ETHIOPIA
Tsion Getachew Tenna; (Assis Profe) Belay Wonber; (PhD) Abenezer Wakuma
Displaced people due to development projects face many socio-cultural and economic&#13;
challenges. Assessment on displaced persons due to the Dire Dawa City Administration`s Sabian&#13;
Redevelopment Project was conducted to assess the socio-cultural effects of DID on the&#13;
displaced households, to assess the economic effects of DID on the displaced households and to&#13;
assess the coping strategies practiced by displaced households. The study employed a mixed&#13;
method approach using census-based survey, key informant interviews, FGDs and desk review of&#13;
relevant published documents to collect primary and secondary data. Descriptive analysis was&#13;
used to describe the extent of the socio-cultural and economic effects of DID.&#13;
The study findings show that the displaced people`s social ties were weakened, their&#13;
neighborhood and social networks disrupted due to the displacement and they struggled with&#13;
accessing basic social services. The displaced HHs were pushed into economic hardship. Loss of&#13;
employments and income greatly affected their ability to meet basic needs and they lacked&#13;
assistance to restore their livelihoods and economic wellbeing.&#13;
Ther study recommended measures to be undertaken by government and other stakeholders such&#13;
as consent and participation of project affected communities in decisions concerning them, raise&#13;
awareness on the rights, obligations, opportunities and challenges of DID, encourage displaced&#13;
people to get involved in activities that can help them re-establish social networks and continue&#13;
practicing their cultural traditions at their new settlement area, working on rebuilding economic&#13;
condition and restore the livelihood of displaced persons as well as conducting further studies on&#13;
the long-term effects of DID

within the family, schools, and religious institutions, on developing gender perspectives. The&#13;
research was conducted in the Amirnur and Aboker districts of Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, using&#13;
primary and secondary data sources. Primary data collection methods played a central role in&#13;
this study and heavily relied on responses from various participants. Qualitative data collection&#13;
techniques were utilized, including audio-recorded in-depth interviews, FGDS and&#13;
observations. The researcher analyzed the qualitative data, encompassing observations, in-&#13;
depth interviews, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions thematically to&#13;
extract meaning and patterns observed in the data. Then, the researcher aligned the data&#13;
analysis process with the study's objectives. In conclusion, the findings of this study shed light&#13;
on the complex interplay of family, school, and religious institution influences in shaping&#13;
childhood gender perspectives and People’s adult gender perceptions are directly or indirectly&#13;
influenced by their childhood experiences to shape, while these influential factors can&#13;
perpetuate traditional gender norms, they also offer opportunities for intervention and change.&#13;
Recognizing these institutions' significant influence and role in the continuity of attitudes into&#13;
adulthood is crucial for promoting gender equality, challenging biases, and fostering a more&#13;

<title>ASHURA FESTIVAL: ITS PRACTICE AND VALUE IN HARARI NATIONAL REGIONAL STATE</title>
<link>http://ir.haramaya.edu.et//hru/handle/123456789/8078</link>
<description>ASHURA FESTIVAL: ITS PRACTICE AND VALUE IN HARARI NATIONAL REGIONAL STATE
Arif Taha; Dr. Biniyam Bogale; Dr. Temam Haji
The study has tried to Assess the practice and value of Ashura festival. It also examines the&#13;
current practice of this festival in the study area. The descriptive design backed by case&#13;
analysis, both qualitative and qualitative approach has been employed for this study. The&#13;
target populations of the study were religious leader, elderly and historian, youth association,&#13;
school’s principals, tourism and culture experts, local guides, tourist information center,&#13;
University, Museum and heritage related institutions, employee and senior officers, higher&#13;
officials of relevant governmental institution. 297 samples were drawn from the target&#13;
population through probability and non-probability sampling designs. Then data was&#13;
collected through key informant interview, FGD and questionnaire through simple random&#13;
and purposive sampling. The analysis has revealed that the customary practice of Ashura&#13;
precedes the introduction of Islam among the Harari community. The practices are more&#13;
likely associated with the ancient solar calendar of whom Harari inherited from their&#13;
ancestor. Currently, the celebration of Ashura Festival has incorporated both religious and&#13;
customary practice. The festival exhibited the historical evolution of the Harari community&#13;
from sheltering in pre-historic cave settlement into the Geyusu (people of the city or simply&#13;
urban dweller). Hence the study argues the importance of reconsidering the origin of Harari&#13;
as native to Ethiopia rather than migrant. Though the interpretation and meaning might shape&#13;
over time like any other festival. The pillar of the festival focuses on wishes for health, peace,&#13;
and prosperity in the coming year. Analysis has revealed that the Ashura festival has&#13;
enormous historical, cultural, religious, political, and economic significance. The festive has&#13;
research and discovery value, symbolic value, reinforcing the social order, unity and&#13;
familiarization unifying and sustaining cultural groups, social integration and mutual co-&#13;
existence economic value, medicinal value, health, and wellness values. However, despite such&#13;
excellent value, unsatisfactory condition has been revealed regarding the practice of Ashura&#13;
festival in Harari Regional State.
