Abstract:
In Ethiopia individuals have aware that being healthy is important but not the benefit of
participating in PE activities to lead healthy life style. The purpose of this study was to assess
the Attitude of students, teachers and principals towards the benefit of PE for health and other
subjects in selected primary Schools of Addis Ababa city administration of Yeka sub city.
Descriptive survey method was designed for the purpose of the data collection. From the
population of 1816 students, 177 students were selected by stratified, 12 PE teachers were
selected by purposive and 6 principals were selected by availability sampling. The major
variables that were evaluated in this study are attitudes of students, teachers and principals
towards the benefit of PE for the development of health and the role of PE for other subject’s
performance. Questionnaires with five point likert type were adopted from Joshua Taylor
(2012) to examine students and teachers attitude towards the benefit of PE for health and
other subjects. Interviews and focus group discussion were conducted with teachers and
principals. The questionnaire was analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean value and
ANOVA. Interview and focus group discussion were coded, transcribed and analyzed. The
major finding of this study reveals that female students had more miss understanding than
males and grade eight students had more negative attitude than seventh grades towards the
benefit of PE for health with difference (p<0.5)whereas PE teachers and principals had
positive attitude towards the benefit of PE for health with no difference on gender and
qualification variables (p>0.5).Students’ and principals had negative attitude whereas PE
teachers’ had positive attitude about the benefit of PE for other subjects performance.PE
activities did not implemented in relation to the development of students’ health. As result the
investigator recommended that PE teachers’ create awareness among students to promote
positive attitude towards the benefit of PE for health and other subjects.
