Abstract:
The purpose of the study was the assessment of female students participation in Ethiopian cultural
games and sport in case of Adola College. The sample respondents in this study were 191 female
students which were selected by used Slovin’s formula simple random sampling technique from the
total population of 366 female students PE department at Adola college. The research design for
this study was descriptive survey method. Questionnaires were distributed for 191 female students
to collect sufficient data. The depth interviews were also conducted with 2 experienced physical
education teachers’ and 3 stream heads and 4 top college management and narrated by the
researcher. For this research TALIS (2013) questionnaire was used to assess female students
participation in ECGS. The questionnaire contains a total of 29 items and seven parts. Data
collected from study participants analyzed statistically by used (SPSS-20 version). The study used
descriptive statistics like percentage, frequency and mean for the purpose of data analysis. The
findings of the study evidences the presence of gaps between boys and female students in ECGS
practical class participation. In addition, the findings clearly showed that there are many factors
which hinder the female students participation in cultural games and sport practical classes.
Female students’ experience many and varied barriers to participate in cultural games and sport.
These include lack of support from their family and college societies, poor of self confidence, lack of
back ground knowledge, socio-cultural influence, religious influence, current low involvement and
lack of appropriate educational system. To this end, developing the awareness of the society, good
work interaction with the stack holders, Regional, Zonal and Woreda Educational Bureaus should
give greater attention and supervision for the educational system. Female students should take the
necessary part in ECGS during their lower and upper primary school years provided with the
required facilitates, and the society must encourage the female students to engage in ECGS during
practical activities which can help their improvement in the participation.
