dc.description.abstract This study aims sought to investigate the factors affecting the implementation of physical education lesson in Basso preparatory and secondary schools in Debrebirhan town. Four basic questions were raised to achieve the objectives of the study. To answer those basic research questions, descriptive survey research design was employed. The study was conducted on three secondary schools. To achieve the objectives of the study 3 school principal, 6 physical education teachers, 1 supervisor, and 1 wereda education head were selected purposively. Based on their availability, 182 students were selected through Kothari (2004) stratified sampling technique, from the total of 2336 students. In- depth interviews with school supervisor and wereda education head, observations for teachers as well students and questionnaires for students, teachers and principals; were employed to collect data for this study. The data obtained were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods. Based on the analysis, it was found out that most of activities observed in the schools were not congruence with the statements of curriculum implementation. This is evident that principals and teachers performance with regard to the requirements of curriculum implementation were found minimal. and students’ attitude of learning physical education subject was also not as expected. Attempt has been made to identify the factors that hinder the successful implementation of physical education lesson. Among the factors identified: the shortage of relevant instructional material resources in the school, shortage of play ground, shortage of time allotment, lack of collaboration trend between school community and lack of relevant in-service training programs for teachers were found the major challenges that hinder the effective curriculum implementation process in the surveyed schools. Finally, the study recommended that other researchers conduct a research and work on the improvement of curriculum materials especially with regard to time and periods of physical education to make it effective, the school communities, the wereda education expert has to work together to solve the problem of facilities and equipment’s and sport fields. en_US
