Abstract:
This study was carried out to assess the practices of active teaching learning methods in
PE. The school success is determined by good teaching learning practices. The teaching
methods are considered the nucleus in meeting the skills, knowledge, values and
attitudes needed for establishing and enjoying an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as
building student confidence and competence in facing challenges as individuals or in
groups through a wide range of learning activities. This study was conducted at Robe
Secondary and Preparatory Schools; Bale zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. The
assessment of implementing active teaching learning practices were evaluated in terms
of personal physical fitness and health, practical activities, student class ratio, teaching
aids for PE, interest toward PE subject, students and teachers motivation, skills related
to teaching methods during pre service and attention of school administration. The study
employed questionnaire, interview and observation in data collection tools. For the
purpose of the study, primary data were collected from 89 students’, 3 teachers and
principals. Secondary data were collected from various educational websites, books and
journals. The researcher was used strata sampling techniques. The descriptive survey
design was employed in this study for its appropriateness to gather adequate and
relevant data on the actual implementation of the PE practical classes in the area under
the study. The data were analyzed used descriptive statistics such as percentages,
frequency and chi-square. The results of study showed that majority of the respondents
are dissatisfied with the practices of implementing, handling associated bottlenecks and
school administration out look towards active teaching learning methods in their
schools. Hence, the active teaching learning methods in the schools under study can be
concluded as low level. It is recommended that Skills competency gap of teachers should
be addressed, physical and health benefits of PE subject should be well communicated to
the students, convenient and sufficient period allocation to the subject together with
required facilities and management support should be considered so as to achieve the
maximum possible of the intended out come.
