Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the major factors affecting male handball project
participation and development in Amanuel town Machakel woreda East Gojjam zone in Amhara
Region. To conduct the study, descriptive survey design was used with mixed approaches, which
is both quantitative and qualitative research approaches are used. In the selection of the sample
population purposive sampling technique is used for taking all project trainees, coaches and
coordinators as respondents for this research. A sample of 23 trainees, 2 coaches and 2
coordinators, a total of 27 respondents are used. The main instruments of data collection were
questionnaire and observation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, SPSS
software, frequency and percentage. The significance difference between the observed and
expected values were determined by using chi-square test at p-value <0.05 level. The major
findings of this study include the major factors affecting male handball project participation and
development are equipment and facilities, community participation and sport offices, the
availability of facilities and equipments is not enough for proper training , trainees , coaches
and coordinators have a medium level of motivation or interest towards handball project, the
involvement of the community to enhance the handball project is very low. for the improvement
of the handball project the Machakel woreda sport office should fulfill the materials and
facilities needed for the participation and development of handball project, woreda community
should increase the financial and material support and also encourage handball project
players, Machakel woreda sport offices should give a proper attention to the handball sport and
should prepare regular games and competitions like other ball games , Experience sharing and
friendly matches should be adjusted by coaches and coordinators, the woreda sport offices and
coordinators should give chances for handball project to participate and compete with zonal
championships, the coaches should have the chance to upgrade their coaching skills by taking
coaching programs and short term trainings, physical education teachers should create
interamullar handball competitions in school compounds and support talented students.
