Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess teacher-student interaction in Physical
Education class and the perception of non-physical education teachers in the case of Mida
Kegn Woreda secondary schools. The sample of study consisted of 343 students and 4 physical
education teachers, 31 non-PE teachers and 3 school principals drawn from the three
secondary schools. The research methodology employed in the study was a descriptive survey.
Regarding sampling technique, students and non-physical education teachers were selected
from each sample schools by using stratified random sampling and simple random sampling
techniques respectively. PE teachers and school principals were selected by using purposive
sampling technique. Through the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews
students, PE teachers, non-PE teachers and school principals shared their ideas about
teacher-student interaction in PE class and the perceptions of non-PE teachers towards
physical education class. The frequency counts, percentage and Statistical Packages for
Social Sciences (SPSS) were used to make analysis of the data obtained from the respondents
under the study. An extended review of literature is implemented to discuss the different
principles of theory of teacher- student interaction practices available from different sources
of books, and journals. The major findings of this study included lack of PE teachers
participating in different school sport programs (84%), the Physical Education teachers did
not listen to the students patiently(60.4%), insufficient time allotment for physical education
lesson (77.9%), and the large class size (94.6%). Therefore, on the basis of the key findings,
the researcher recommended that the PE teachers should participate in different school sport
programs, should listen the students patiently when they go to ask questions to develop the
positive attitude of non-PE teachers,the time allotment forPElesson and large class size
should be reconsidered in order to improve the teaching process and teacher-student
interaction in physical education class.
