Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors affecting participation of students in
physical education class in the Leka Dullecha Woreda secondary and preparatory schools.
To achieve these purpose 110 male and 70 female, totally 180 students, 3 physical education
teachers and 3 school directors were selected as a study sample. In this study all schools,
PE teachers and school Directors are selected by using purposive sampling techniques.
From all secondary schools and preparatory school 10% students were selected from both
sex from each class by simple random sampling techniques. The researcher used
quantitative methods in order to achieve the intended objectives. The data collection
instruments were questionnaire, interview and observation in classroom and practical
session. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The result of the study
showed that, 71.2% students from all selected schools agree on the idea which is deals with
factors which can hinder their participation in physical education class by extremely agree
and 66.7% PE teachers agree students attitude and interest towards in physical education
class. Based on the findings the study indicates from all of selected school the majority of
students have low participation in physical education class due to interest and attitudes of
students for this subject, shortage of sport materials, lack of physical education reference
books. This all factors also one of the reasons for low participation of students in physical
education class. To promote participation of students in physical education class physical
education teachers and stack holders do interactively with each others, using appropriate
teaching methodology, providing the required sport materials, school communities and
educational bureau must encourage students to engage in different mechanism which can
help in improvement of participation of students in physical education class.
