Abstract:
The major objective of the study was to assess the attitude of male and female students toward
physical education. The study examined the attitudes of 185 preparatory and high school
students towards physical education and how these attitudes differ by gender. For this study both
chelenqo preparatory and high school institution was purposively selected to be the setting of the
study. The descriptive-sarvey study type of research was used. Out of 200 students with using
yamane (1967) sample size formula, 185 students were randomly selected from grade 9 (21.6
of male and 12.4 of female), 10 (17.3 of male and 16.2 of female), 11 (5.4 of male and
10.8 female) and 12 (5.4 of male and 10.8 of female) as study sample and take Likert-type
scale attitude questionnaire. And four physical education teachers were also purposively
selected for interview study from three high school of Meta districts. The main data gathering
tools are modified questionnaire, interview and observational cheek list. Data were analyzed
using SPSS for windows version 16.0 statistical tests were performed at the level of significance
of 0.05.The collected data were analyzed using mean score and t-test statistics. It was found that
both male and female students exhibit significance difference on attitude toward physical
education. And also, the result indicate that although both male and female students held
positive attitude toward physical education, male attitude were greater positive attitude than
female students .Based on the result, Some of the recommendations were; both male and female
students should be advise to like physical education course equally without any comparison with
other subject. Physical education teachers should give immediate feedback to his students when
students are participating in classroom and practical session. Because, an immediate feedback
may be good in order to increase positive attitude of students.
