A SURVEY STUDY ON THE PAST AND CURRENT STATUS OF MALE BASKETBALL TEAM: THE CASE OF SELECTED WOREDAS OF GAMBELLA REGIONAL STATE, ETHIOPIA

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the past and current status of male Basketball team: in Gambella regional state in reference of selected woreda. A descriptive survey method was employed. Both the quantitative and qualitative approaches were followed in this study with more emphasis on qualitative approach. Closed and open-ended questionnaires and in depth interviews were used for primary source of data, where as document analysis was employed as secondary source of data. Nearly 116 Basketball players who are currently in the teams and 53 former Basketball players were selected by simple random sampling technique. In addition to this, 8 coaches and 8 youth and sport office officer from three woredas and one administrative town were selected by purposive sampling to generate the required data during this study. The data collected through questionnaires were analyzed by using SPSS v20 (by using percentage). The significance level was determined as p<0.05. The data collected by interview and document analysis were analyzed qualitatively by narration. Conclusions from the data revealed that due to well coordination and commitment among concerned bodies(community, NGO’s and investors) and free from external interference the pervious result of the team was very good but currently in the region the team status were failed to show the expected level of the performance progress the result that the Basketball has registered in Ethiopian Basketball championship competition most of the time shows that Unfit for the competition organized at national level and the best results of the team were fourth place in different tournament. On the bases of the findings of the study recommendations were drawn all the sport leaders and coaches should work smoothly for the same goal, and the regional concerned bodies should work with difference stake holders to Overcome the challenge
