Physical education is an educational process that uses physical activity as a means to help
people acquire skills, fitness, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to their optimal
development and well-being. The purpose of the study was to assess the awareness of
students towards the importance and benefits of physical education in Guliso preparatory
school, in West Wollega. Primary and secondary data was used for the study. The primary
data was collected from the questionnaire as well as secondary data was from literature
review, books and internet. Sample was drawn from Guliso Preparatory School using
stratified random sampling techniques and designed by descriptive survey method. 20% of
the population among1332 was included in the study. Accordingly, 182 students of grade 11
out of which 89 male and 93 female and 84 students of grade twelfth out of 44 male and 40
female students. Totally 266 students were included in the study. The data were gathered
using questionnaires from the selected students and it was analyzed using various statistical
measures like, standard deviation and mean and independent T-test with that equality of
variances (Levene’s Test) was used to compare the mean of the respondents. The result
shows that among comparative female and male of the aforementioned students indicated
that the mean awareness of male students were 154.23 and female students were 149.53 with
standard deviation 57.747 female and 57.468 male students of Guliso preparatory school.
The result also shows there was significant difference between male and female students
when tested by independent T-test. This indicated that male students had better awareness
compared to female students toward the benefit and importance of physical education.
