Erectile dysfunction is defined as the in ability to achieve or maintain erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. Prevalence of erectile dysfunction among diabetic men varies from study to study. Although It is believed to be widespread among men with diabetes often remain undiagnosed and neglected. Erectile dysfunction can affect all aspects of a patient’s life including physical, emotional, social and sexual relationships. Hence, it demands appropriate assessment and prompt treatment. Objective: The main objective of this study was to determine prevalence and determinants of erectile dysfunction among diabetic patients attending Hiwot Fana Specialized University hospital follow up clinic , Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods:Institution-based cross sectional study was conducted on 210 diabetic patients who are attending in Diabetic follow up clinic at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital. The list of diabetic patients was obtained from the follow up registration book and study participants was selected randomly by using random computer-generated number. The data was collected using interviewer administered structured questionnaire from February 1 to March 30, 2020 and entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20.Correlation and multivariable logistic regression was employed to test associations between independent and outcome variables .All the tests were considered significant at P <0.05 Result: A total of 210 study adult men diabetic patients, who have been on follow up at diabetic clinic were included with the response rate of 100%. The mean age of the respondents was 54.53 (SD+13.73) years. The overall prevalence of erectile dysfunction was 83.8%(95% CI 78.1.88), with (26.7%) suffering from mild, (37.5%)mild to moderate, moderate (29%) and severe ( 6.8%)ED.Multivariate logistic regression revealed that erectile dysfunction was significantly associated with old age (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] AOR: . 2.9( CI: 1.48,5.67 ) and poor glycemic control{AOR: 2.140(CI 1.9,7.44). Conclusion: The present study revealed high prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetic population .Age and glycemic factors were significantly associated with erectile dysfunction. Great majority didn't ever requested for treatment .Thus, routine screening and management for erectile dysfunction in diabetic patients should be part of routine medical care particularly for elderly and those with poor glycemic control.
