dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate determinants of quality teaching in physical education in some selected secondary and preparatory schools of Dire Dawa city administration. To conduct this study, qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. The data were distributed and collected from 327 students, 6 school Principals, 2 supervisors and 12 physical education teachers. Focus group discussion was conducted along with sample schools directors; schools based supervisors and physical education teachers. Purposive and random samplings were used. The main instruments of data collection were questionnaires, focus group discussion and observation. The results showed that students level of participation in physical education class and in different sport activity is low, and issues pertaining to high schools’ curriculum to give chance for special need students are not considered; students’ and school administrators’ attitude towards physical education were low, instructional materials and facilities were inadequate, subject the policy makers particularly minister of education should look for additional periods, the allotted time to physical education was not enough, physical education was not considered as basic subject, large class size, relationship of community and schools, schools environment and shortages of qualified physical education teachers were claimed by majority of sample schools respondents as determinants of quality teaching in physical education. Finally, possible recommendations were forwarded based on the major findings; so as to minimize problems encountered the implementation of quality teaching in physical education. en_US
