CHALLENGES OF FEMALE STUDENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION PRACTICAL CLASS AT WEMBERMA WOREDA, AMAHARA REGIONAL STATE, ETHIOPIA

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges of female students in practical physical education in Wemberma Woreda, West Gojjam Zone. To conduct the study, descriptive survey research method was employed. The data were obtained by means of close ended questionnaires and semi structured interview. The questionnaires were distributed to 350 female students from Mekonnen Shindi and Bekele Kassa Secondary School. In this regards, interview guides and observation checklist were used to gather additional data. The data was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Accordingly, the research revealed the following results. Although the female students have moderate perception on practical physical education, it was also understood that there is shortage of adequate number of equipment, kits and facilities for some practical activities. Besides it had also been revealed that there were no adequate play grounds such as hand ball and football playing grounds, gymnasiums and tennis courts to exercise practical activities. It is therefore, wrong perception, poor facility, inadequate infrastructure and peer influence are the major challenges for female students to participate in practical physical education in general.
