dc.description.abstract The main purpose of this study was to assess the Practices and Challenges of Teaching Basketball in Goro Gutu woreda Secondary Schools. To undertake this study, descriptive survey design was employed. The sampled school includes four schools. The subject of the study were 115 (15 %) Grade 11 students, 4 (100%) HPE teachers, 4(100%) principals, and 4 (100%) department head were selected by Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Even though questionnaires were the main data gathering instruments, focus-group-discussion (FGD) and observation were also used to enrich the data gathered. The qualitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics like percentages and frequencies. Data obtained from (FGD) and observations were analyzed qualitatively. Accordingly, the research revealed the following results. The cooperation and commitment of school principals and the quantity and quality of technical equipment for basketball practical session were found to be not encouraging. In addition to these, HPE teachers' have weak pedagogical skills to relate the theoretical aspect of the syllabus with its practical aspect in the basketball field to promote individual practice and not technically competent enough to teach basketball practical session in light of individual and team practice due to lack of attention on how to utilize the rules of basketball. Students have weak in playing basketball and they were practicing common personal and technical fouls and violations and week peer assessment experiences were recognized in the school understudy. Lack of material and facilities, large class size also the result. In order to address these challenges and problems, recommendations were also formulated. School principals and department head should be cooperative and committed in adjusting the school environment through budgeting time and resources, fulfilling basketball technical equipment and motivating HPE teachers by providing trainings, seminar and workshops. HPE teachers and Grade 11 students should apply the theoretical rules of basketball learned in the class room in the field of basketball properly. The school and the woredas education office should pay due attention to budget allotment of the government school, so that necessary material will be bought in sufficient quantity en_US
