Abstract:
This study was targeted at assessing instructional material in PE in Secondary School of Shambu Administrative Town, Oromia RS, Ethiopia. To conduct the study, the researcher used descriptive research design which includes both qualitative and quantitative technique. The researcher selected 348 respondents (341 from secondary school students, 4 PE teachers and 3 school directors) to conduct the study. Simple random sampling method was employed to select students while purposive sampling was used to select principals and PE teachers. Data for the study was gathered using questionnaire, interview and observation. Data gathered through questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics (computed mean value, frequency distribution and SD). Data gathered through open ended questionnaire, interview and observation were analyzed qualitatively. The finding of the study discussed that instructional materials for games, ball game instructional materials gymnastics tripod instructional materials, indoor and outdoor instructional materials and athletic track instructional materials were moderately available in the sampled secondary schools. The finding of the study identified that PE instructional materials used during practical session had moderate effect on the teaching and learning process of PE while they had high influence in class rooms. The study further depicted that there was moderate effort made by school administrators in handling and proper utilization of PE instructional materials while teachers and students made high effort in proper handling and utilization of PE instructional materials. Based on the major finding of the study and the problems addressed, the researcher recommended that school principals need to perform their roles accordingly in proper utilization and handling practices of PE instructional materials. The study also recommended that government, teachers and student parents need to perform their roles accordingly in improvising and alleviating instructional materials from the local environment to improve teaching and learning process of PE in both class rooms and practical sessions.
