Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess factors affecting grade 9 students listening comprehension skills of Burka Wayu and Gara Guri Secondary schools In order to achieve this purpose, the researcher employed a descriptive survey study research design along with quantitative and qualitative research methods. The participant of the study were 78 grade nine students who were selected using systematic random sampling method and three grade nine English language teachers who were selected using available sampling technique. To collect the required data, three instruments such as questionnaire, classroom observation and interview were used. Then, using frequency and percentage, quantitative analysis was employed to analyze the responses given to each item in the questionnaires and the findings of the classroom observation. The data obtained from interview and open ended question of classroom observation was analyzed qualitatively. The finding of the study thus revealed that teachers attitude of teaching listening, poor pronunciation and the way of presenting the three phase of listening as the major listening comprehension factor related to teachers; students’ low motivation towards listening skills, inability to use listening strategies and inability to manage tasks as students’ related factors; and noises as physical related factor that affects students listening comprehension. Finally, it was recommended that practical in-service trainings on how to teach listening skill should be given to the teachers. Similarly, the students should take their own responsibility to employ various techniques and strategies to be good listener. The Ministry of Education should also make the buildings sound proof.
