Abstract:
Breech delivery is the most common of malpresentation. Breech delivery causes
adverse foetal outcomes during pregnancy especially in delivery, leading to a considerable increase
in perinatal morbidity and mortality. Although different studies have been conducted in different
parts of the country to our knowledge, there is no study done in Hiwot Fana comprehensive
Specialized University Hospital. There is paucity of evidence of perinatal outcome and mode of
delivery, hence this study is aimed to assess the prevalence and perinatal outcome of singleton
term breech delivery among women delivered in Hiwot Fana comprehensive Specialized
University Hospital.
Objective: To assess the prevalence and perinatal outcomes of singleton term breech delivery
among women delivered in Hiwot Fana comprehensive specialized University Hospital Harar
eastern Ethiopia from March 1/2022 to November 30/2022
Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted on 227 women who give birth
term breech. Data were obtained through face-to-face interview by using structured questionnaire.
Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to find factor associated with adverse perinatal
outcome, P-value <0.05 was considered as significant statistically.
Result: A total of 227 breech deliveries were included. Prevalence of perinatal death among
singleton breech deliveries in this study was 18%. Perinatal mortality of singleton term breech
delivery was significantly associated with parity (AOR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.1–8.5), Antenatal care
(AOR = 3.36, 95% CI = 1.3–8.8), stage of labor (AOR = 11.3, 95% CI = 2.3–53), and mode of
delivery (AOR = 14.3, 95% CI = 1.87–110).
Conclusion and Recommendation: Perinatal mortality rate, of 180 per 1000 breech deliveries.
Which indicate that breech vaginal delivery is associated with an increased perinatal mortality and
morbidity than caesarean delivery. Factor such as parity, lack of antenatal care and stage of labor
are significantly associated with increased perinatal mortality. Prenatal evaluation for fetal
presentation during antenatal care and other parameters to decide on route of breech delivery
should be performed as routine activities.
