Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the students-centered approach in teaching
physical education: The classes of some selected secondary schools Gololcha Woreda East Bale
Zone, Oromia Regional States. The study designed by descriptive survey and mixed methods
approach was used to undertake this study (qualitative and quantitative). First, the
Woreda was selected by purposive sampling method and simple random sample was used
to select schools. Again, simple random sampling technique was employed to select
participant of the study. Thus, the participants of this study were 3 school leaders, 3 vice
principals 3, teachers and 316 students. The instruments of data collection were
questionnaire, interview and observation checklist and interview. The data were analyzed
using frequency, mean standard deviation and percentage. The findings of the study
indicated that the implementation of student centered approach was affected by three
major factors. These are teachers, students and school facility related factors. Finally,
the following recommendations were forwarded, it is important to conduct pre- service
training of teachers to improve implementation of Student-Centered approach. Moreover,
teachers should have to develop self-commitment for implementation of Student-Centered
approach. Educational officials should have to timely effective communication and
organize workshop to update the knowledge and perception of teachers for
implementation of Student-Centered approach.
