Abstract:
This study aims to investigate awareness and attitude of students and teachers towards physical activity of bisidimo secondary school. Four basic research questions were raised to achieve the objectives of the study. To answer those basic research questions, descriptive survey research design and primary source of data was employed. To achieve the objectives of the study 278 respondents were selected from 919 students through Stratified random sampling methods and 15 respondents were selected from 37 teachers through simple random methods and 10 school managements were selected purposively. In depth questionnaire and interviews were prepared to collect data for this study. The data obtained were analyzed through both quantitatively using frequency and percentage, and qualitatively in simple sentence. Based on the analysis, it was found out that the current students (40.76%) awareness were not good and the attitude were mostly negative, whereas teachers (81.32%) awareness were good and also have positive attitude, grade 12th students (40.94%) were have better awareness and mostly neutral attitude than any other students of the school, whereas grade 9th students (59.01%) were have poor awareness and mostly negative attitude than any other students of the school. Among the factors identified: lack of support and motivations from students family, experts and teachers in lower grade, a gap of knowledge or skills, lack of attention to give priority for physical activity to made the best of their leisure time, absence of appropriate instrument and facilities in the school as well as in the town were affect the awareness and attitudes, and hinder participation of PA. Finally this study recommended physical education teachers to design various mechanisms to make better awareness and attitude, students and teachers to overcome lack of skill select physical activity require no new skill, the school community to engage regular activity, the school management to provide necessary sport instrument, and concerned body to conduct deep and wide research work in building awareness and attitude.
