Background: Family planning is the ability of individuals and couples to anticipate and
attain their desired number of children and the spacing and timing of their births. No
studies related to contraceptive discontinuation were conducted at Hidebu Abote woreda
recently. Therefore, this study identifies magnitude and associated factors of modern
contraceptive discontinuation among ever married reproductive age group women’s in
Hidebu Abote woreda.
Objectives: - To identify magnitude and associated factors with modern contraceptive
discontinuation among ever married reproductive age group women’s in Hidebu Abote
woreda, North Shoa, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, April 10-30, 2018.
Methods and Materials: A community based cross sectional study design was
conducted among 601 randomly selected ever married reproductive age group women.
Pretested structured questionnaire which contain calendar data format was used. Data was
cleaned and entered to Epidata version 3.1.Then exported to SPSS version 20 for statistical
analysis. Bi-variate and multi-variate analysis was used with p-value <0.05 to identify
factors associated with modern contraceptive discontinuation among married reproductive
age group women.
Results: - The magnitude of modern contraceptive discontinuation among ever married
women’s in Hidebu Abote Woreda within 12 months was 46%. The method highly
discontinued depot injection and the main reasons for discontinuation were side effect.
Factors associated with modern contraceptive discontinuation age of women’s 15-24 with
AOR=0.16 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.43), women’s with 0-1 children AOR= 3.01 (95% CI: 1.15,
7.87), widowed women’s AOR=4.5 (95% CI: 2.34, 8.74) and intention to use
contraceptive method for spacing (AOR= 6.5 95% CI: 2.67, 15.9).
Conclusion: - High modern contraceptive discontinuation among ever married women may
reflect older age, low parity, widowed current marital status and using contraceptive method for
spacing. Multiple reasons for discontinuation of modern contraceptive use include primarily
concerns for side effect; desire to become pregnant, contraceptive failure and others |
