Abstract:
Background: Men play a critical role in carrying gender equality and decision makers in most
societies, so, the full participation and partnership are needed in productive and reproductive life.
Involvement of men during childbirth help and supports the improved women and newborn
health. In Ethiopia, few studies were carried out male involvement point of understanding for
their contribution to institutional delivery preparation. In the study area, there is little evidence
that could be added male partner involvement in institutional delivery preparation.
Objective: To assess male partner involvement in institutional delivery preparation and its
associated factors among males whose wives gave birth in one year period in Lemmo District,
Hadiya zone, southern Ethiopia, from march 8 to march 30/2019.
Methods: A Community based cross-sectional study was undertaken among 614 male partner
were included in the study, then to select the study participants systematic sampling technique
applied. Data were entered into EpiData Version 3.1 and for analysis exported to SPSS version
24. Frequencies, proportion, and summary statistics were used. Variables having p-value< 0.25
during bivariable analysis were entered into a multivariable logistic regression model to control
for all possible confounders.Level of statistical significance was declared at p-value< 0.05.
Results: The male partner involvement in institutional delivery preparation was 43.1% (95
%,CI=39.2-46.9).Educated male partner primary, secondary and above [AOR=2.2,(95%CI(1.36-
3.530] and[AOR=2.4,95%CI(1.46-4.01)]respectively, Good knowledge in institutional delivery
preparation and danger signs of delivery [AOR,(95% CI) =3.00,95% CI (2.01-4.49)] and
Positive attitude in institutional delivery preparation and danger signs of delivery [AOR
(95%,CI)=3.66,95%,CI(2.45-5.46)],discussed delivery issues with wife[AOR(95% CI) =1.99,
95%, CI(1.33-2.99)]were associated with male involvement in institutional delivery preparation.
Conclusions and recommendations: Male partner involvement in institutional delivery
preparation was low (43.1%). Educated male partner primary, secondary and above ,Good
knowledge ,Positive attitude and discussed the delivery issues with wife of male partner were
independent variables were associated with male partner involvement in instutional delivery
preparation.Therefore, make effort to rise male partner;discussed with the wife delivery,knowledge and
attitude towards institutional delivey preparation and danger signs of labour and childbirth
