dc.description.abstract Background: Family planning is achieved through use of contraceptive method and its promotion has potential benefits of reducing poverty, maternal and child mortality. 64 per cent worldwide much lower in the least developed countries (40 %) and was particularly low in Africa (33%), in Central and Southeast Asia (47%) where as in Ethiopia according EDHS 2016 report only 35 percent and in the region about 1.5 percent are using a modern contraceptive method. However, there is limited evidence regarding modern contraceptive utilization among indigenous and non-indigenous married women of reproductive age group in Ethiopia especially in Somali region. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess level of modern contraceptive utilization and its associated factors among indigenous and non-indigenous married women of reproductive age group in Jigjiga Town, Eastern Ethiopia from February 01 - March 01/2018. Methedology: Community based comparative cross-sectional was applied to study 1004 married women of reproductive age group selected by simple random sampling. Data was collected using pre-tested face-to-face interviewer questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with modern contraceptive utilization. Result: The over all prevalence of modern contraceptive utilization among married reproductive age group women was found to be (19.9% with 95% CI: 17.4%,22.3%) and it was found (26.50% with 95% CI: 20.6%, 31.8%) for non- indigenous and (11.4% with 95% CI: 8.6%, 13.9%) for indigenous women. Indigenous women with primary level of education [(AOR=0.84, 95% CI: (0.15,0.85)], being somali in ethnicity [(AOR=0.75, 95% CI: (0.15, 0.94)] and those with Waiting time less than one hour to got service [(AOR=2.21, 95% CI: (2.51, 9.53)] were associted modern contraceptive utilized, while non-indigenous respondents with age group 30- 34years [(AOR=1.56, 95% CI: (1.31,9.52)] and knew importance of modern contraceptive as prevent pregnancy[(AOR=3.27, 95% CI: (1.38,4.34)] were associated with modern contraceptive utilization. Conculsion: Utilization of modern contraceptive were low among indigenous compared to non indigenous group. About one-third of non indigenous and about less than one- seventh of indigenous were utilized modern contraceptive method.
