Patients’ Expectations towards Nursing Care and Associated Factors at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia.

Abstract

Introduction: Nursing care is one of the most important components of health care and Patient expectation toward nursing care is being rising. Accordingly, patients’ expectation needs to be managed adequately in order to improve outcomes and decrease liability. But, there is no enough evidence that identifies the patients’ expectations toward nursing care and its associated factors. Therefore, this current study tried to fill this gap. Objective:To assess level of patients’ expectations towards nursing care and associated factors. Methodology: The study was conducted at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital. Hospital based quantitative cross-sectional study design was applied. 387 admitted patients from the selected wards who fulfill the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The sample were allocated for each wards based on the number of beds and particular patient was obtained using simple random sampling. Data were collected using face-to-face interviewer administered questionnaire by 6 data collectors. The collected data were entered into EpiData 3.02 and then exported and analyzed using SPSS 22. Both descriptive and inferential analysis were done and information is presented by using summary measures and tables. RESULT: The over all expectation mean score was 16.76 with standard deviation 0f 3.26 out of 22 maximum score. More than half of participants two handred thirty five(61%) had good expectation towards nursing care. Being treated in medical ward had better expectation towards nursing care than other wards AOR=2.247(1.101-4.589) and patients having good perception had better expectation towards nursing care than patients having poor perception AOR 3.146(1.31-7.54). Being rural residence was two times more expectation towards nursing care than being urban residence (AOR=2.034; 1.104, 3.496). Age of patients had significant association with patient’s expectation to nursing care. Being in the age between 21-30 year had 2 times more expectation towards nursing care than other age group(AOR=1.89;1.21,2.65). Conclusion:Findings of this study revealed that majority of respondents have good expectation. Age, educational status, residence, patients level of perception and ward are factors that have significant association with their expectation.
