Abstract:
Background: The intention of women in reproductive age group from short to long-acting family
planning method is a common phenomenon. Out of 182 million pregnancies estimated to occur annually
in low-income countries, more than one-third were unintended. However, Data on the magnitude of the
intession to shift from short term to long term family planning methods were limited in low-income
countries including the study setting. Objective: To assess
the magnitude of Intention to Long Term Family Planning Methods and associated Factors among
Women of Reproductive Age Utilizing Short Acting Family Planning in Assosa Zone, West Ethiopia
from May21 –June20/ 2017. Methods: - A Health facility based
cross-sectional study design was used. Data were collected systematically selected 796 womens from
randomly selected 3 health centers by proportionate allocation from May 21 to June 20/2017. Data entry
and analysis were done using Epidata version 3.1 and SPSS Version 20.0 statistical softwares
respectively. Bi-variable logistic regression analyses were done to see the association between dependent
and each independent variable. Odds ratio along with 95% confidence interval were estimated to identify
factors associated with the intention Result: Intention to
shift from short to long-term family planning methods in the future was 68.3%, 95%CI (65%, 71.5%) of
womens. Being Muslim [(AOR=1.45, 95% CI= 1.01-2.086)], Protestant & Catholic followers
[(AOR=2.97, 95% CI= 1.24-5.74)]. Household monthly income of 4001-5000 [(AOR=3.41, 95% CI=
1.26-9.22)]. Decision making by herself [(AOR=0.3495%CI=0.17-0.71)]. Transportation cost up to 10
Birr [(AOR= 0.38, 95%CI=0.25-0.59)]. Had one child, had two children [(AOR=1.89,
95%CI=1.41-2.45)], [(AOR=1.9, 95%CI= 1.52-2.96)] respectively. Had no male child, had one male
child, had two male children [(AOR=5.73, 95%CI=1.93-17)], [(AOR=7.56, 95%CI= 3.51-16.29)],
[(AOR=2.13, 95%CI= 1.19-3.8)] respectively. Had no female child, had one female child, had two
female children [(AOR=10.18, 95%CI=4.24-24.4)], [(AOR=12.98, 95%CI= 6.19-27.22)], [(AOR=2.39,
95%CI= 1.21-4.73)] respectively were the factors significantly associated with the intension to shift to
long acting family planning methods. .
ConculussionandRecommendations: -Intention to long-term family planning methods was 68.3%.
Religion, household monthly income, Decision-making, transportation up to 10 Birr, having total
children, number of male children, number of female children, were the factors significantly associated.

Therefore, encouraging relatives and religious leader’s involvement, the use of mobile
familyplanningshouldbestrenghened.
