Abstract:
Integrated community case management (ICCM) is the strategy that enables the community level assessment, classification, treatment of childhood illness like pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, and malnutrition which are the common causes of mortality and morbidity among under-five children. The ICCM service is provided at the community level by the health extension workers and communities were expected to seek service for the common childhood illnesses. However, evidence regarding ICCM service utilization is lacking in eastern Ethiopia including the current study area.
Objective: To assess magnitude of integrated community case management service utilization and associated factors among mothers/caretakers of children aged 2-59 months.
Methods: A Community-based quantitative cross-sectional study design was employed in Mieso District from May 20, 2020, to June 10, 2020.There were 496 mothers/caretakers selected by using single population proportion size technique. The data were collected by using structured questionnaires. Data were coded and entered into Epi data version 3.1 then exported to STATA version 14.2 for analysis. The predictors of integrated community case management service utilization were estimated using adjusted Odd Ratio, 95% CI, at P-value<0.05.
Result: The magnitude of integrated community case management service utilizing among mothers/caretakers was found to be 35.7%. Mothers/caretakers who had attended formal education (AOR= 0.49; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.96), husband who had attended formal education (AOR=0.48; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.77), mothers/caretakers who had previously visited health post for any service (AOR=0.33; 95% CI: 0.17, 0.63) and mothers who were delivered at health facility (AOR=2.05; 95% CI: 1.36, 3.09) were predictor factors of utilization of integrated community case management service.
Conclusion: The Magnitude of utilized integrated community case management service in Mieso district was low. Concerned bodies should have to Strengthening integrated community case management service with other health services, better to sustain intuitional delivery services and provide information of the service availability is a recommended
