Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore Practices and challenges of implementing continuous
assessment in Physical Education and suggests potential solutions to the challenges. Four
basic questions were raised to achieve the objectives of the study. To answer these basic
research questions, descriptive survey research method was employed.
Concerning the number of sample subjects, the study was used a total of 322 samples
from two sample secondary schools. Among the total of 1461 sample subjects, 314
samples are students,4 samples are Physical Education Teachers and the remaining 4 samples
are school principals. The school principals were selected by purposive sampling, whereas
students were selected by stratified random sampling method. The major findings of this study
include every poor document handling and record keeping of learners' continuous assessment
achievement. Most physical education teachers assess their students once in a semester,
Teachers that use this assessing frequency account about 75% of the total while only 25% of
Teachers assess their students monthly. Many assessment techniques were used improperly.
The study also found that large class sizes inadequacy of school infrastructure, lack of
manuals, weak follow up support and feedback system on the implementation of continuous
assessment, lack of material and playground in the schools was the major challenges of
implementing continuous assessment. For further improvement, adequate and updated
manuals, support and immediate feedback on the learners' continuous assessment
implementation, fulfilment of facilities and materials and also adequate playground were
suggested as potential solutions to the proper implementation of continuous assessment
