Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to as asses the influence of parenting style on pro-social
behaviour of adolescent students. Correlational research design was employed. The target
population was adolescent students of Haramaya Towns secondary schools. Out of 1835
adolescent students of four secondary schools found in the town, 330 students were taken
through stratified random sampling. Data were gathered by close ended questionnaire. Data
gathered through questionnaires were analysed using percentage, frequency, mean,
combined mean, standard deviation, pooled standard deviation, Pearson product moment
correlation, multiple linear regression and independent sample t-test. The results indicated
as that first, Authoritative parenting style is most commonly experienced parenting style by
Haramaya Town secondary schools’ adolescent students. Second, Emotional pro-social
behaviour was the most commonly experience pro-social behaviour among these adolescent
students. Third, there was statistically significant correlation was observed between overall
parenting style and pro-social behaviour of adolescent students. Finally, there weren’t
statistically significant mean difference observed in prosocial behaviour among male and
female adolescent students. It was recommended that parents, teachers, psychologists,
students, school administrator, and concerned body should have to work on adolescent pro social behaviour aggressively. Moreover, Other researchers who want to conduct research
on similar issue are recommended to on social, psychological and economic variables which
are not addressed by the current research that can influence adolescents’ pro-social
behaviour that helps to understand the full image of prosocial behaviours
