Abstract:
Background: Globally, the impact of Human immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired immune
deficiency syndrome is the major factors that constrains the economic development of the
country especially the low income countries.Mining work is found to be significantly linked to
the spreads of this disease due to a factor such as living away from families, settling and limited
access health care in Africa, especially in sub-Sahara region.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the Prevalence and associated factors among adult
mining workers in Shakiso District mining area in Guji Zone, Southeast Ethiopia start from
December 10, 2021 to December 25, 2021.
Methods: Community based cross sectional study was conducted in Shakiso mining area. The
study was including 483 participants which, were drawn by using simple random sampling
technique. A Structured pretested questionnaire was used for interview and test was done for
Human immunodeficiency virus status after receiving their informed consent. The collected data
was entered to using EPI-data version 3.1; and cleaned, edited and analyzed using version 24
Statistical package for social science. Descriptive statistics (Mean, Mode and Media) were used
to describe the study population in relation to relevant variables. Bivariate and multiple logistic
regression analysis were carried out to see the association of independent variable with the
dependent variable.
Result: Overall, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among adult mining workers was 6.63% (95% CI:
0.02, 0.068). The main factors associated with HIV/AIDS include: Being widowed by marital
status 0.08(0.02,0.65), increase age of respondents 1.4(1.1,3.1), rural place of birth
0.18(0.16,0.94), can’t read and write by their educational status 1.9 (1.2, 5.2), as increase their
monthly income level 3.0 ( 1.2,3.8), inconsistent condom utilization 2.3(1.2,11.7), alcohol
consumption history 4.8(1.3,6.8), having multiple sexual partners 2.4(1.6,6.8 and khat chewing
0.8(0.2,0.85) were among the factors significantliy associated with HIV/AIDS.
Conclusion and recommendation: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS was high and the problems
were also of particular concern.To reduces the prevalence of this disease among mining workers
health education on consistent condom utilization and provision of condom are recommended.
