Abstract:
Background: Failure to utilize modern contraceptives resulted in youth women getting
unplanned pregnancies that had detrimental effects to both their health and their thereafter social life. However, there is scanty of information on utilization of modern contraceptives
among youngmarried women of 15-24 years in Jijjiga town, Somali region, Ethiopia
Objective: To assess utilization of modern contraceptives and associated factors among
young married women of 15-24 years in Jijjiga town of Somali regional state, Ethiopia,
from 15 January 2024 to Feboury 15 2024.
Method:A community-based cross-sectional studywas conducted among 392 randomly
selected women aged 15-24 years in Jijjiga Town of Somali Region in Ethiopia. A
pretested-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants through
face-to-face-interview. Data was entered using EpiData version 3.2 and analyzed using Spss
26. Descriptive statistics like mean, frequency and proportion was used. Bivariable and
Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses was used to identifyfactors associated with
utilization of modern contraceptives among married women of 15-24 years. Adjusted odds
ratio and 95% Confidence interval was used to report the association and significance was
declared at P-value<0.05.
Result:In this study the magnitude of modern contracepticeulitization were 7.9%(95% CI:
5.6,11.3). The mean age of the respondents was 19.3 (±2.4) years ,mothers who have own
autonomydecision (AOR= 4.8, 95%CI:(1.01,6.6), mothers who have
mentionedcounseledat labor and delivery (AOR= 5.5, 95%CI(1.39,7.2), were factors
positively affect modern contraceptive utilization. In another, being governmental
employee(AOR= 0.15, 95%CI: (0,03,0.74)was negatively affect the utilization of modern
contraceptive in this study.
Conclusion: In this study we found that the utilization of modern contraceptive in jigjiga
town was low compared to studies done in the other regions of the country, religion,
mother with governmental occupation, mother’s autonomies, and mothers pointed to
counselled at labor and delivey were significant associated with utilization of modern
contraceptive use.
