Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of SBS in teaching learning process
insecondary schools of Arsi zone, Oromia Regional State.Four basic questions were
formulated toconduct this study and the descriptive survey design was employed. Among 12
woredas and 2 admini strative towns found in the zone, 5 woredas and one admini strative
town were selected by using simple random sampling technique. 6 secondary schools were
selected by simple random sampling technique. Namely: Siltana, Tereta, Bokoji, Digelu,
Meraro, and Ego . From these sampled schools of 237 population 191 respondents was
selected. (All 61 SBSC and 12 guidance & counciling student by avialablity, 5 Cluster
supervisors by purposivlysamling technique and 113 teachersby using stratified Stratified
random sampling and simple random sampling technique ). Questionnaire was used as main
tool of data collection. Interview and document analysis were used to substantiate the data
gathered through questionnaire. mean ,average mean ,standered divation. Inferential
statistics t-test were utilized to analyze quantitative data collected through the questionnaires
while the qualitative data were analyzed using narration . The results of study show that the
level of effectiveness of SBSC, its contribution for teaching-learning practicss and the
conduciveness of teaching –learning process in secondary schools of Arsi zone were below
expected. It was poor inupdating skill of teachers lack of trained SBSC, in ade quate budget
allocated for supervision program, lack of sufficient classroom teaching materials, Finally, to
minimize the problems of school based supervision in secondary schools, it is recommended
that: schools principals and WEO should give relevant in-service trainings, workshop and
experience sharing programs for SBSC and teachers b/n the staff and by inviting internal or
external body experts to upgrade the effectivness of supervisory practices and develop their
awareness. Schools should reduce the teaching loads of SBSC teachers and allocate an
adequate budget for the effectivness of supervisory practice at the school.
