dc.description.abstract This study was conducted with the objective of assessing the socio-economic status of elderly people in Merti District on five selected kebeles. The selection of these kebele was purposive. So as to attain the intended objective of the study Descriptive survey research methodology that includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed. For this study primary source of data was used. The data was collected by using interview schedule and key informant interview. Survey was conducted on 310 elderly people from the selected five kebeles, and key informant interview was completed with elderly people, and officials of an organization of elderly and its members. The collected data was analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive methods such as percentage and frequency, and the qualitative data was analyzed manually through careful interpretation of meanings and organize the themes, and finally the quantitative and qualitative data was integrated in accordance to the objective of the study. Based on the analysis and discussions focusing the socio-economic statuses and existing living condition of elderly people from social and economic contexts the findings were carefully summarized and concluded. The findings of the study indicated that generally the elderly people face both social and economic problems. The elderly live with their children had a burden and abused properties, have no formal education, had low level of income; engaged in the informal and tiresome works for the sake of income source. The findings revealed that the respondents were unable to cover cost of medical services, and performed their daily activities as they had no option. Have limited and occasional social participation; social security (pension) covered smaller number of the respondents. Also inadequate Social support was observed and the support was not permanent. Based on the study findings, therefore, conclusion and recommendations were drawn which help to alleviate the existing problems of elderly people. The concerned bodies should establish and strengthen community-based supports that provide special support in financial, material, educational, medical and counseling services and create opportunities to participate in income generating activities en_US
