Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess opportunities and challenges of implementing
transformational leadership in secondary schools of Guji zone. Descriptive survey design was
used in this study .The study conducted in six secondary schools. These sample schools were
selected by simple random sampling techniques. School leaders (Twenty four department
heads, 6 unit leaders, 6 vice principals, 6 principals and 6 supervisors) were included in the
sample by available sampling techniques and 67 teachers included in the sample by stratified
random sampling techniques. Data gathering instruments were questionnaire, interview and
document analysis. The quantitative data were analyzed using percentage, mean, frequency
tables and t-test. The qualitative data were narrated and triangulated with the information
obtained through questionnaire and interview. From this analysis, it was found that the
implementing transformational leadership in secondary schools was highly degraded to equip
the school community with necessary knowledge, skill and attitude. Lack of confidence,
admirations, commitments and readiness to collaborate, lack in spend time for teaching,
coaching, mentoring, counseling and advising subordinates, lack of facilitate members to
appreciate and develop values, beliefs, vision and goals of educations in new era of
globalization on recent issues were fundamental problems encountered. Therefore,
components of transformational leadership were not taking places as expected in the
secondary schools. Less opportunity to implement transformational leadership in secondary
schools due to lack of trained teachers, leaders and supportive staff, lack of empowerment
and delegate the stakeholders. Major challenges that hinder the opportunity to implement
transformational leadership in secondary schools, are the major problems empowering and
delegating the stakeholders and in adequate training on leadership to the teachers and the
school leaders. All school leaders are advised to establish strategies that of all the
stakeholders to develop the opportunity to implement transformational leadership in the
schools.
