Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess and identify the practices and challenges of principals’
training and development in secondary schools of West Arsi Zone. The total number of respondents
were 80 that were 8 principals,8 vice principals 16 CPD coordinators 8 supervisor, 16 woreda
education offices heads and 16 woreda education offices experts and 4 zone education office
experts were participated for this study. To achieve this study purpose, the descriptive research
design was employed. Questionnaires, interview and document analysis were used as instrument of
data collection. Data were collected from 8 government secondary schools 8 woredas of West Arsi
Zone .The data were analyzed by using descriptive statically instrument like frequency, percentages,
mean and standard deviation. It also applied inferential statics’ through t-test at 0.05.The finding of
the study revealed secondary schools of West Arsi Zone tended to emphasize on role concern for
principals training and development..The finding of this study suggested that concerned bodies of
principals’ training and development lack attentions. Lack of training need assessment, assigning
qualified principals, this means below MOE standard, lack of allocating adequate training time and
materials, lack of motivation for good performance, formulating and communicating school vision,
school stakeholders participation, curriculum theory ,planning and development as well as
performance of principals in plying their role were found as limitation. Moreover, schools lack autonym
in decision making, there was limitation in ensuring the implementation of training, following and
supporting school leaders, and giving feedback timely were also seen as limitation. In order to achieve
the goals of training and development programmes the systematic assessment has to be conducted,

education stakeholders should give support for schools. In addition to this, MoE, Regional Education
Bureau, Zone and Woreda education office should arrange capacity building raining, program,
attractive salary, motivating good Performance.
