Abstract:
Introduction-A pregnancy is most defined as unintended if it is either unwanted that means
occurred when no children or no more children were desired, sometimes termed “number
failures”), or is mistimed at the time of conception (occurred earlier than desired but would have
been desired at a later time, sometimes termed “timing failures”).However, there was limited
information in the study area that describes the magnitude of unintended pregnancy and
associated factors among pregnant mother.
Objective- The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude of unintended pregnancy and
associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Bako Tibe District West
Shoa zone, Oromia region from March 1 to April 1, 2019.
Methods-.Institutional based cross sectional study was conducted. The sample size for the study
was 612 pregnant women. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection and the data
was collected using interview. The collected data was checked for completeness, edited, coded
manually and entered into Epi Data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20.00 for analysis.
Descriptive analysis was done by computing proportions and summary statistics. Bivariate and
multivariate analysis was done to see the association between the outcome variable and each
independent variable.
Result:- Magnitude of unintended pregnancy was 33.3%; 95%CI (29.8, 37.3). Family size ≥ 6
[AOR=8 95%CI(1.38-46.66)], Women who didn‟t communicate about family planning with her
husband[(AOR=2.80; 95%CI: (1.50-5.20)], Parity≥5 [(AOR: 3, 95%CI: (1.34-6.8)], ,showed
significant association with unintended pregnancy.
Conclusion and recommendation: Parity, family Size, lack of spousal communication showed
significant association with unintended pregnancy. Health bureau and health worker should work
to scale up communication of couples about fertility and contraceptive issues through peer
education and promoting long‐term modern family planning methods
