Abstract:
Background: Intention defined as expressed motivation to perform some behavior. In Ethiopia
one hundred women die in health facilities each year from abortion-related complications.
Ethiopian Ministry of Health has led integrating safe abortion and post abortion contraception
but there is high abortion rate around study area additionally there is no clear evidence showing
about intention to use post abortion contraceptive using behavioral model which is mandatory to
study intention behavior.
Objective: This study tried to assess intention to use post abortion contraceptive and associated
factors among women visiting health facilities for abortion services in Harari region and Dire
Dawa City Administration, eastern Ethiopia, March 1-April 6, 2019.
Methods: an institutional based cross -sectional study design was conducted. It was done among
609 women. Sequential sampling technique was used. Structured questioner and interview data
collection method was used for data collection. Data were coded and entered using EpiData
version 3.1 software and exported to SPSS window version 20. Binary logistic regression was
done. Variable which have P≤0.25 in the bivariable analysis was entered in to the multivariable
analysis. Variables with p<0.05 were declared as statistically significant.
Result: The overall magnitude of intention to use post abortion contraceptive was 74.7% (95%
CI: 71.3-78.2). Women who had contraceptive use history, no pregnancy plan within the next
two years , positive attitude ,high level of subjective norm and high level of perceived behavioral
control were found positive association with intention to use post abortion contraceptive with
AOR and 95%CI of 2.580;(1.216-5.473), 2.859 ; (1.451-5.635), 3.335; (1.831-6.077), 3.348; (1.805-
6.210)], 6.784; (3.650-12.607) respectively. Women who were divorced and had wanted pregnancy
abortion were negatively associated with intention to use post abortion contraceptive with AOR
and 95%CI of 0.149; (0.039-0.578), 0.336; (0.153-0.735) respectively.
Conclusion and Recommendations- Generally, there was good magnitude of intention towards
contraceptive after abortion service. Marital status, contraceptive use history, desire for
pregnancy, plan for pregnancy with in the next 2 years, attitude, level of subjective norm and
level of perceived behavioural control were an independent factors of women’s intention towards
post abortion contraceptive use. To increase women’s intention, it is better to direct the
counseling method for improving women attitude and ability to control behavior.
