Abstract:
Background: Caesarean section refers to the delivery of a fetus, placenta, and membranes
through an abdominal and uterine incision. Over the last decade, there has been a raising rate of
cesarean section. The average global rate of CS is 18.6%, ranging from 6.0% to 27.2% in the
least and more developed regions, respectively. However, there is paucity of data on the
magnitude and factor associated with cesarean section in the study areas.
Objectives: To Assess Prevalence and factors associated with caesarean delivery among
mothers who delivered in Gelemso General Hospital from September 1, 2017-January 30, 2018.
Method: Institutional based cross- sectional study design was conducted by reviewing charts of
350 mother who delivered from September 1, 2017 to January 30, 2018 in Gelemso General
Hospital. Data were collected by using a structured checklist by trained data collector. Data were
entered into Epi-Data version 3.1 computer software and exported to SPSS statistical software
version 24 for analysis. Bi variable binary logistic regression was used to see the association
between each independent variables and dependent variable. All variables with P-value < 0.25,
during bi-variable analyses were considered for multivariable logistic regression analysis to
control for all possible confounders and to identify factors associated with cesarean section.
Odds ratio along with 95%CI were estimated to measure the strength of the association. Level of
statistical significance was declared at p value less or equal to 0.05.
Result: The prevalence of cesarean section in the study area was 28.2 %( 95% CI: 23.7,
33.3).number of parity (AOR = 1.9,95%,CI:1.01,3.63),non-cephalic fetal presentation(AOR =
5.01, 95 % CI: 2.07, 12.29), having previous cesarean section(AOR = 3.48, 95 % CI: 1.33,9.10)
and maternal age more than 35years(AOR = 4.19, 95 % CI: 1.01,17.29) were significantly
associated with cesarean delivery.
Conclusion: This study revealed that the prevalence of the cesarean section in the study area was
high. Previous cesarean section, parity of three or more, non-cephalic fetal presentation and
maternal age more than 37 years were significantly associated with cesarean section.
