Abstract:
Background: Induced Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy before the fetus
can live independently. An abortion may be elective (based on a woman's personal choice) or
therapeutic (to preserve the health or save the life of a pregnant woman). Approximately 20
million unsafe abortions are performed worldwide every year. From the studies conducted in our
country, Ethiopia, we can see that the prevalence of induced abortion and its negative
consequences are increasing from time to time and thus related information needed to make
aware the magnitude of the problem to those professionals who give abortion care services
especially in this hospital and to make informed decision towards prevention of this major
reproductive health problem.
Objective: To assess magnitude and associated factors of induced abortion among women who
seek post abortion care from sep 1, 2016 up to sep 1, 2018 G.C at Chiro General Hospital.
Data was collected from july, 15-25/2018.
Method: A facility based cross-sectional study design was conducted among women who seek
post abortion care using a structured questionnaire with a calculated sample size of 422. Using
simple random sampling technique, Data was collected with all women who recieved post
induced abortion care that fulfilled the inclusive criteria were included in the study and study
was carried out from july,15 -2018 up to july, 25- 2018 . Statistical software Epi data version 3.1
and SPSS version 23 was used. Descriptive statistics, bi variate and multivariate logistic
regression models for identifying the association was used; interpreting the degree of association,
Odds Ratios (ORs) with 95 % Confidence Intervals was computed & p - value < 0.05 was
considered as significantly associated with the dependent variable.
Results: A total of 182(43.1%) induced abortions were detected from 422 participants. Majority
of the womens 53(71.9%) were aged 15–19 years and relatively equal 91(44%) & 91(42%) were
from the urban and rural area. moreover, 74 (83%) were students. 89 (43 %) were Muslims
followed by orthodox Christians 81(47.3).
Those variables which were significant at P< 0.05 in binary logistic regression entered into
multivariate logistic regressions. four independent variables were analyzed in logistic regression
with outcome variable to know their association. This multivariate analysis had identified that
participant’s age, occupation, and reason of abortion had significantly associated with induced
abortion.
x
Those participants whose age were in between 15-19 had 2.8 times [95% CI: AOR, 2.8(1.03-
7.8), p-value = 0.044] more likely to carry out induced abortion than those who age were >40
years, Participants’ who were students in their occupation were 5.4 times [95% CI: AOR, 5.4
(1.3 - 22.6), p-value=0.021] more likely to had induced abortion compared to Participants who
were house wives. Additionaly, clients who came due to Incest&Rape were 12 and 6.8 times
more likely to carry out Induced abortion Compared to clients who came due to medical
problems[(95% CI: AOR, 12(1.3-109.8), p-value=0.027) and (95% CI: AOR, 6.8(2.1-22.4), pvalue=
0.002)] respectively.
Conclusion:
Generally, the study revealed a high level of induced abortion; this implied that unwanted
pregnancy is high among the aborted clients in the study area. In this study, age, occupation and
reasons of abortion were significantly associated with induced abortion.
Recommendations
For Chiro General Hospital
Since Induced abortion was high; increased access to high-standard family planning service,
strict counseling about family planning method, and partner involvement in family planning
service should be emphasized.
