Abstract:
Background: -. Reducing the risk of severe perineal laceration is an important clinical goal
Because severe laceration are associated with significant morbidity. However, there is
scarcity of literatures that shows practice of episiotomy, indication, proper procedure and
complication even if episiotomy is common emergencies observed in low income countries like
Ethiopia.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to the prevalence of Episiotomy Practice and
Associated Factors among Laboring Mothers in Gelemso General hospital and health center
,Oromia Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia from march 10/2015 to April 5 /2015. Method- : Institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted among randomly
selected 406 laboring mothers visiting Gelemso General Hospital . Data were collected using
structured questionnaire through interviews and checklist. Then data were coded, entered,
cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 16.1.Bivariate -analyses were employed to assess the
relationship between independent variables and dependent variable - Odds ratio along with the
95% confidence interval was estimated using multivariable logistic regression to identify factors
associated with episiotomy practice. Level of statistical significance was declared at P- value less
or equal to 0.05.
Result- The prevalence of episiotomy was 40.9 %, 95%CI (9.57(2.75,3 3.3),1.31(1.14,165) and
1.017(1.002,1.024). Results of multivariate analysis showed that History of having circumcision
[AOR=9.57 95% CI (2.75,33.3)] ,rural residence AOR=[1.31 95 % CI (1.14,165)] being
primigravida AOR=1.01795 % CI (1.002,1.024) ] were independently associated with episiotomy
practice
Conclusion -: The prevalence of episiotomy practice was high in Gelemso General hospital and
health center. Laboring mothers who has history of circumcision, mothers who come from Rural
area and primigravida mothers were the independent predictors of episiotomy practice.
Providing health education to decrease Or stop Circumcision and making internal assessment of
the episiotomy practice of the health professional will be the way to decrease the prevalence of
episiotomy practice.
