dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the role of school leaders in motivating secondary school teachers of East Hararghe Zone Oromia Regional Stateand to suggest possible mechanisms to combat the problem. Issues related to the role of school leaders in motivating secondary school teachers were raised as guiding questions. A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. The study included 109 respondents: 8 supervisors,16 principals and vice principals, 8 unit leaders , 8 head departments and 69 teachers drawn from eight secondary schools. Data were collected using questionnaire, interview and document review. Data obtained through questionnaire were analyzed using statistical tools like frequency, percentage and mean. Moreover, data were gathered through interview and document review was analyzed in narrative form to complement the questionnaire. The finding of this study revealed that lack of adequate resource, lack of pay given to teachers for incentives, lack of experience to motivate teachers, lack of identifying teachers endeavor, little desire in involving teachers in decision making and poor school physical working condition hindered the role of school leaders in motivating the secondary schools teachers‟ of Eastern Hararghe Zone. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the school leaders deliberately prepare well coming ceremony for teachers‟ motivation in their future work, the school leader Creates positive environment in which good working relationship exist, the school leader establish a productive working relationship with staff, the school leader practicing promotion practice to increase teachers‟ motivation ,improve lack of pay given to teachers‟ motivation, research activities, supervision, working with parents and students, and staff development has effect on the role of school leadership in motivating teachers. Because of such poor performance, quality of education is adversely affected . In line with the above findings and conclusions, it was recommended that: Most of the secondary schools principals were not played their role on motivating their teachers. There fore, to run the teachers‟ motivation effectively the regional, Zone and woreda education offices should have to give great consideration in allocation of budget, sufficiently distributing materials,give training for school leaders on how they paly their role to motivate teachers,make shairing experience ,sustainable follow up and encouragement en_US
