Abstract:
Every woman has the right to a positive birth experience and compassionate and
respectful care from knowledgeable, skilled providers in a health institution. But women across
the globe experienced disrespectful and abusive treatment during labor and childbirth in health
institutions. Evidence on the status of respectful maternity care and associated factor among
women during childbirth was not well studied in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area.
Objective: To assess respectful Maternity care and Associated Factor among women who
delivered at Bishoftu Town, public health facility East, Shewa Ethiopia.
Methods: Facility-based cross-sectional study design was conducted, on 380 women delivered in
Bishoftu town from July 25 to August 25, 2021. All women who deliver in Bishoftu public
health facilities were included. Systematic random sampling technique pretested standardized
questioner were used for data collection. Data were entered and checked with Epidata version 3.1
and was exported to SPSS version 26. Binary and multivariate logistic regressions were used to
identify the association and independent predictors of respectful maternity care. Finally, a p value of less than 0.05 was declared the association
Result: A total of 370(97.3%) women participated in this study. The overall magnitude of
respectful maternity care was 156(42.2%) 95%CI: (37-47). Discussion during ANC (AOR)=
2.08;(95%CI 1.15,3.7), planned pregnancyAOR=3.5;(95%CI 1.19,10.27), Day time delivery
AOR=1.9, (95%CI 1.13,3.28), Deliver at Health center AOR=1.89, (95%CI 1.07,3.35), presence
of birth companion AOR=7.4, (95%CI (4.04,13.6), were found to be significantly associated
with respectful maternity care.
Conclusion: Overall magnitude of respectful maternity was low and the prevalence of disrespect
and abuse was high. Health institutions & other stakeholders should give due emphasis on
