Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the current practices and challemges of HRM
in secondary schools of Kersa Woreda, East Hararghe Zone, Oromia Regional State,
Ethiopia. As to research design, descriptive survey design was used in the study area. A
total of 126 sample respondents were selected using whole population (census) and
purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaire and interviews were instruments of data
collections for the study. The collected quantitative data were analyzed by using
descriptive statistics mainly percentages, mean, standard deviations and F-test were used
to analyze the data and the qualitative data were analyzed by using thematic analysis
method. The major findings of this study was the major HR practices like; manpower
planning ,training and development, performance appraisal, compensation practices and
effective teamwork were insufficiently or low practiced with overall mean of 2.28
(SD=0.64) in secondary schools, whereas the teachers performance practices, like
professional knowledge, instructional strategies, assessment strategies, positive learning
environment and professionalism that the teachers provided a well-managed, conducive to
learning and encourages respect for all students relatively was higher(M=3.59, SD=1.17).
In general, researcher has concluded that there were challenges in accomplishment of
school leader’s a HR practices and teachers performance. The implication of this study
that HR practices have a great role of improving teachers performance so that to gain
more knowledge for teaching staff the impact of human resource practices have on
teachers performance. The researcher recommended that the Kersa Woreda education
office in collaboration with secondary schools stakeholder better to facilitate on-job
trainings,and off-training, facilitate a regular and fair performance appraisal system to be
attained school goals and objectives in secondary schools. It needs continues
comprehensive and deepest study to promote teachers performance by ensuring HR
practices in the East Hararghe Zone, particularly secondary schools in Kersa Woreda
