Abstract:
Background:Provision of family planning following childbirth is an important opportunity to
address the unmet family planning needs of women and enhance theirfuture reproductive
health of women. In developing countries like Ethiopia, utilization off postpartum family
planning continued to be suboptimal.itis not well exploredin the Ethiopian context,
particularly in the study setting.
Objective:To assess family planning utilizationand associated factor among reproductive-age
women (15–49 years)who gave birth at the at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital,
Harar, Ethiopia, from July1
stto September 30th
, 2022.
Methods:A facility-based, cross-sectional studywas conducted Systematic random
samplingwas employed to select 352postpartumwomen who get birth HFSUH. Datawere
collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Women who get birthfrom index
pregnancy with GA >28 weeksor 1 kilogram of the neonateare included.
Data wereentered and coded by using Epi-info version 7.0 and statistical analysis done by
using SPSS version 26Descriptive analysis was used to describe sociodemographic
characteristics,Logistic regression was employed to determine factors associated with post partum contraceptive utilization. AdjustedOdds ratio with a 95% confidence interval
wascalculated, anda p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Tables and figures wereused to
present the results.
Result: Out of the 352 sampled women, 341 women were interviewed- yielding a 96.6%
response rate magnitude of postpartum contraceptive utilization was 41.0%. The odds of
postpartum contraceptive utilization were high among mothers whose age was below 34
years (OR,3.14;95%C.I:1.95-4.69, P<0.005), 284 (83.3%)
CONCLUSION:According to this study The magnitude of postpartum contraceptive
utilization was 41 %compressive counseling at ANC follow-up and during the postpartum
period by a health professional,Maternal age, maternal educational level, husband educational
leveland Encouraging service utilization like ANC may serve as a gateway for information
about and utilization of PP contraception
