Abstract:
The major purpose of this study was to analyze the contributions of NGOs in the provision of alternative
basic education program in Jig-jiga zone. Accordingly, it drowns and assessed the following specific
objectives. This are 1) examine the contribution of NGOs that implemented the ABE program, 2)
determine the degree of work cooperation with community and governmental 3) identify the
major challenges and problems of ABE centers 4). The study was conducted 14 ABE schools.
Descriptive survey research method was employed. The participants of the study were 70 PTAs, 78 ABE
school teachers and 14 directors selected based on available sampling, simple random sampling and
availability sampling respectively. Data were gathered from Woreda officials and NGO officials through
interview and ABE Teachers, PTA and school principals through questionnaires. SPSS version16.0 was
employed to analyze the data by percentages and mean score. The qualitative data were also analyzed
in narration. The major finding shows; the contribution of NGOs was high in the activities of text book
preparation, school grant budget, school furniture and equipment provision and teacher training,
opening new ABE schools, teaching aid material support, build classroom, giving training seminars and
workshops for staffs and teachers and provision of stationery materials while less contribution in the
activity of build infrastructure such as, separate toilet, water centers, student library, recreational center,
play ground, sport fields and materials. Here, it identifies facilities which need improvement like built
sport fields, supply of drinking water, toilet centers, and recreational centers. The result also shows lack
of coordination work among stakeholders in the area of school security, low participation in school
meeting and sending children to centers. Similarly the finding shows low attitude for modern education,
inability to cover education cost and high demand children’s wage labor were problems related to
community whereas assign lower school budget, low consideration for school infrastructure, low
attention for school inspection activity and absence of work evaluation were the problems related to
government . Hence, it recommended that, the NGOs should be improving their provision in kind,
quantity and quality in infrastructure such as toilet center, water center, recreational center and spot
fields should be solved all ABE schools. Similarly, they should be work cooperatively with community
and government in the issue of keeping school security, low attitude for modern education, high demand
of children’s labor, school budget, inspection procedure and evaluation activity.
