Abstract:
The study was aimed at investigating Gender in-equality in education, factors for low participation of females in educationthe case of jigjiga town. The objective of this study was to assess the major factors that hinder the enrollment and participation of girls in primary and secondary education in Jigjigatown. In order to have a clear concept of the nature of the problems that affect the participation of females in education, the study employed a descriptive research design. Descriptive research design is a process of collecting data in order to answer questions concerning the current status of the subjects under study. Such a research design is also suitable for refining the research tools such as questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and document analysis. There are five primary schools and two Secondary and two preparatory schools in Jigjiga City Administration. The study employed the full cycle primary and the secondary and preparatory school, the sampling techniques of the study the target populations were 524 female students in Jigjiga primary (5-8) and Secondary and preparatory (9-12) schools.100 Sample female students were drawn from the targetedpopulation. Besides, the study included 13 teachers selected among 82 teachers from both schools. In addition, school principals, PTAs, and Women’s Affair Officials were included in the study. Many teachers who are teaching in second cycle primary and secondary and preparatory school are under qualified. This contradicts with new educational and training policy, which proposes for 2nd cycle primary school diploma holders and for secondary schools first-degree holders. Most female students are over aged or in adolescence period in which they face many emotional problems and most of them have uneducatedparents, one of the suggested recommendations is To increase the number of qualified teachers in jigjiga complete cycle primary and secondary and preparatory schools of jigjiga city
