Abstract:
Anemia is common medical problem in pregnancy in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiologic needs. Though anemia in light of its magnitude and associated factors well studied, there is a paucity of research regarding maternal anemia and its association among pregnant mothers admitted labor ward in this study. Objectives: To assess anemia and associated factors among pregnant mother admitted to Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia from June 1-30/2020. Methods and materials: Facility based cross-sectional study were conducted among 314 pregnant mothers admitted to Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital. The data was collected by using standardized and pre-tested questionnaire on sociodemographic data, maternal, lifestyle and dietary related factors. Systematic random sampling was used to select the study participants. The data was entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 22 for analysis. All covariates that are significant at p value < 0.25 in bivariate logistic regression analysis was considered for further multivariable logistic regression analysis. Level of statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05. Anemia measured by their hemoglobin level of the participant, the hemoglobin level below 11g/dl also anemic. Result:The magnitude of anemia in the current study were 37.9% with 95% CI (32.4, 43.0) a logistic regression showed that significantly associated with birth interval AOR=2.5 95%CI(1.02,6.13),blood loss AOR =4.3 95%CI(1.86,9.9),citrus fruit intake in a week 1-3 times AOR=2.9 95%CI(1.2,6.9) and meals frequency per day AOR=2.2 95%CI (1.0,4.6). Conclusion: Finally, the finding in this study demonstrate that there is a high prevalence of anemia among pregnant women admitted in lobar ward blood loss, birth interval, frequency of meals per day <3times and citrus fruit <3times in a week are risk factor for anemia from this conclude that to counsel family planning for increased birth interval and counseling about increasing of meals frequency during pregnancy and daily intake of food rich in iron is recommended for mothers to reduces iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy and prevention and treatment about blood loss are recommended.
