Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to assess the practices and challenge of instructional leadership in
secondary schools of Raya kobo, Woreda, North Wollo, Amhara Regional State. To conduct the
study, descriptive survey design was employed. The study was conducted in 5 secondary schools of
Raya-Kobo Woreda. The respondents were school instructional leaders (5 principals, 5 viceprincipals,
25 department heads and 5 supervisors were selected availability sampling) and 122
sample teachers from total 177 were selected by simple random sampling. 5 PTSA chairmen were also
selected purposefully. Questionnaire, interview and document review were used to collect data for the
study. The questionnaire was developed and allocated to 35 school instructional leaders and 122
teachers. Interview was conducted with 5 PTSA chair man and 5 school supervisors and the
documents were reviewed by the researcher in 5 sample secondary schools. Frequency, percentage
and mean were employed by using SPSS version 16 to analyze the quantitative data. What is more, it
was very difficult to achieve the schools’ mission, vision and goals because the school instructional
leaders would not equip to lead the schools. Those are also retard the productivity and growth of the
school. There were factors that affect the practices of instructional leaders; these were dearth of
knowledge, infirm use of resources, poor induction program, lack of training and immediate turnover.
So, the researcher recommended that, the Zone, Woreda education expert and school instructional
leaders should give short term training and supportive school supervision to realize the schools’
mission and vision. The school supervisors and principals will be committed to vanish the above
problem in order to accelerated pretty instructional practices in school. The MoE will provide effective
instructional leadership training continuously and reduce turnover of staff.
