Abstract:
The study was instigated to examine the existing Practice and Challenges ofIL in Government Secondary Schools of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. In order to address the objective of the study, a descriptive survey method was employed. The target populations of the study were 382, respondents from five government secondary schools of the city. The researcher incorporated 34.5% (132) of the sample populations as respondents. Ten principal and vice principals in the schools, 115 teachers, and 7 Supervisors and case team leaders were primary sources of data. Stratified random sampling was used to select teachers’ department heads while purposive sampling techniques was used to select principals, supervisors and case team leaders Data obtained through questionnaires were analyzed using statistical tools like frequency, percentage , mean, standard deviation.The finding of the study revealed that current practices of IL in secondary schools of Dire Dawa were practiced by principals at a moderate level.The challenges of properly implimenting IL were lack of cooperation and commitment among the staff members for the improvement of instructional activities, school wide vision and mission, skill, support from top officials and administrative work over load, proper monitoring and constructive feedback available resource allocation, up -to -date trainings for principals.Based on the findings, it is recommended that , Dire Dawa Education Bureau,and the supervisors of secondary schools are advised to give due attention in monitoring and supporting school leaders regularly, creating experience sharing program on good practices, and providing relevant trainings continuously on the core dimensions of instructional leadership in collaboration with nearby colleges, and universities
